Questions and Answers - Interview taken for Discovery Channel

INTERVIEW SUBJECTS FOR NOSTRADAMUS

(Discovery Channel, 2002)

1. Do you believe Nostradamus predicted the World Trade Center attack of 9/11?

Yes, the answer is on my Internet site.

2.Why do you think a quatrain attributed to Nostradamus about the World Trade Center went around the Internet after 9/11?

What circulated were fake quatrains (read more here).

3.Where do you get your quatrain translations from?

I use the princeps edition of Nostradamus, printed by Benoit Rigaud in 1568, in French. Edgar Leoni is the best translation in English, although not perfect. Every quatrain has a commentary by him (not an interpretation), sometimes good commentaries, useful for any interpreter. He is a man of culture. He has a skeptical academical view, but has honesty when the skeptical views are not adequate to recognize the best exegete of the 19th century, Anatolle Le Pelletier.

4. Why is there still so much focus on Nostradamus after more than four centuries?

After a whole life of studying this matter, I consider the Nostradamian Phenomenon as a unique intervention of the Holy Ghost in our Christian Culture.

5. Who was Nostradamus and when did he live?

He was a doctor and lived between 1603 and 1666 in Salon, Provence, France.

6. Was Nostradamus really a Christian convert from Judaism?

His family had already converted to Christianity.

7. Was he an astrologer?

Yes.

8. What role did astrology play in the 16th century?

Very important. It was studied in universities. In the 17th century (1650) a minister of Louis XIV took it out of universities; Rationalism was trying to predominate.

9. Wasn’t Nostradamus a doctor?

Yes, he studied at Montpellier University (near to Salon)

10. What was Nostradamus’s medical role during the plague?

He cured some plague in the cities in South of France. They were very grateful to him.

11. Why was Nostradamus famous during his life?

For his culture, talent in Astrology (almanacs and personal horoscopes), publishing the ten prophetic centuries (these are different then his astrological works).

12. Why was he famous after he died?

Little by little people saw correspondence between quatrains and events.

13. How did he die?

Tortured by gout transformed into dropsy, on July 2, 1566, he was found dead near the bench and the bed, as he predicted.

14. Did he actually predict his own death?

Yes, in Présages (Predictions) # 141—the last one, originally in the Almanac of November 1567. The quatrains published in the Almanacs were collected by Jean de Chavigny in the book La Première Face du Janus Français under the title of Présages (Predictions). Chavigny mentions in this book that he found in the Prophet’s Ephemeris book a note corresponding to the end of June 1566

“Hic proper mors est”

15. Is it true that he was buried with a medallion around his neck predicting when he would be disinterred?

There is no proof of this.

16. Why didn’t the Inquisition persecute him?

The Church did not see with good eye the prophetic phenomenon. Astrology was suspicious to the Church.  But he was protected by the Queen, Catherine de Medici and a lot of other noblemen of the time. They came to him for astrological readings.

17. What did Nostradamus's contemporaries think of him?

Opinions were very contradictory.  As soon as his first book appeared in 1555 (3.5 Centuries) he was attacked. When the second volume appeared (7 centuries & 42 quatrains) he was attacked again by various   savants – see Robert Benazra, Répertoire Chronologique Nostradamique – for the epigrams they made.

18. How did he make his predictions?

  • please explain quatrains

  • please explain the language he used

He declared from the beginning that he received the prophesies from the Holy Ghost in a shape of little flames or dictated by a Divine Splendor that would sit next to him. This is confirmed by a passage where he declares that he was to be attentive even to the pronunciation. This proves the fact that a lot of anagrams deciphered in our time were possible.  If he made mistakes in the construction of mysterious terms by not paying attention to the pronunciation, the deciphering of the enigmas would have not been possible.

19. Were his quatrains written in code?

No. He wrote in a sophisticated language in which he mixed play of words, anagrams, Latinisms, Greek words, and above all methods taken from the secret language of the alchemists, “cabala hermetica”.

20. Do the original copies of the prophecies still exist, and if so where?

In different National Libraries. An edition of the complete opus of 1568 is in my collection.

21. Are the modern translations of the quatrains really accurate to the originals?

No, but the translation of Edgar Leoni is most correct. In most cases the translations are already interpretations – if the interpretation is false the translation is incorrect.

22. Some of Nostradamus’s most famous quatrain purport to have predicted great events.  Can you comment on any of the following and the accuracy of their prophecy?

(1,35) – the death of Henry II

Correct – see Nostradamus Profet al Lumii Moderne, Vol II pg. 14

(8,1) – the rise of Napoleon

Correct – see Le Message de Nostradamus sur l'Ère Prolétaire, pg. 308

Portrait of Nostradamus - 17th Century Engraving.

(1,25) - the coming of Louis Pasteur

Incorrect: “Pasteur” – Nostradamus refers to the Pope

(9,16) - the Spanish civil war between Franco and Riviera

Incorrect:  see Nostradamus - L'Histoire Secrète du Monde, pg.259

(2,24) – the coming of Hitler

Correct – see Le Message de Nostradamus sur l'Ère Prolétaire, pg. 512

(3,60) - the coming of Bin Laden?

Incorrect – see Nostradamus - L'Histoire Secrète du Monde, pg. 278 – re: Stalin and Atatürk

(2,62) - Who is Mabus?

Appears to be a future personality, maybe of the 21st century; related to a comet. I could not find an important name that resembles this by anagram; the facts do not resemble past events.

(10,72) - The Apocalypse?

Incorrect – see Les Dernières Victoires de Nostradamus, pg.231 – The birth of the Great Monarch

23. Some say that Nostradamus predicted three antichrists in the coming ages – Napoleon, Hitler and “Mabus”.   Can you comment on these men and how they pertain to Nostradamus’s prophecies?

The three antichrists he predicted are: 1st – Lenin/Stalin/Trotski; 2nd– Hitler; 3rd – Mao. 4th and 5th are mentioned in the Epistle to Henry Second – but we don’t know their name or time; first one may be in our century.

24. Do you think the World Trade Center is prophesied in the quatrains?
If so, which ones?

See the quatrain interpreted on the web site (V-32).

25. What about his predictions that name names and specify actual dates?

  • Franco – in 9,16 – see above

  • 1999 – in 10,71 – birth of Henric the II – eclipse of Aug 11, see above

  • 1607 – two quatrains: 6,54 and 6,58 - eclipse in Africa - astronomical and cyclological sense under a historic mask

  • 1607 – 8,71 - invention of the telescope & conflicts with the Vatican due to the new astronomical discoveries – in Les Dernières Victoires de Nostradamus

26. How often has Nostradamus been proved right in the past?

Depends on interpretation; in my opinion he was always right
For example: Quatrain 10,72 – 1999 eclipse, birth of the Great Monarch in my interpretation. Others: Apocalypse, asteroids that destroys Paris.

I predicted the fall of communism with a date, from Epistle and various quatrains; including the one indicating the planetary positions and a fixed star – Vega – 1,16 – Les Dernières Victoires de Nostradamus pg.289: Coup d’ Etat manqué de Aug 1991 and Boris Yeltsin’s reforms

27. Isn't it true that you can make Nostradamus's prophecies mean anything?

No, there is only one correct meaning. Nostradamus is underling this in the Epistle

28. How accurate are the films and videos about him?

About his life there are more correct things, but about the true meanings of his quatrains about 20%

29. Can you comment/describe the Nostradamus industry that exploits his name?

True.

30. Please describe the role Nostradamus played in the propaganda machines of the Nazi regime and the allies in World War II.

Astrologer Kraft, a good interpreter of Nostradamus, came with a manuscript of a book to Goebbels to tell the Führer about the possible invasion of Germany by Soviets. Goebbels could not tell Hitler this prediction, and made the manuscript a means of propaganda.
He erased the invasions of Germany and kept only the victories, published the book in all languages. The British responded with a similar literature, but contrary: Nostradamus predicted the victory of the Allies. This was the political war based on Nostradamus.

31. Are there other major unfulfilled prophecies?

  • The Great Monarch

  • Two future antichrists

32. Did Nostradamus really predict the end of the world?

No, never.

33. Are there any other aspects of Nostradamus that have not been mentioned that you would like see covered?  If so, please tell us.

  • Scientific discoveries, nuclear physics

  • Cyclology

  • Alchemical texts

  • The great theme of antiquity; the relation of men and Universe mediated by music.
